Mark wrote how John the Baptist said, “There comes one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.” Mark continued, “And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him”, and in chapter one and verse eleven of his book, Mark wrote how, “there came a voice from heaven, saying, You are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” where we read:
And there came a voice from heaven, saying, You are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
The verse reads, “And there came a voice from heaven, saying, ...” Mark began words, “and there came a voice” which means “and there arose, appeared and came into existence a tone and sound of uttered words”“from heaven” which means “from the origin of the vaulted expanse of the sky with all things visible in it”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”. Mark shared how immediately after Jesus was baptized a “voice” from “heaven” sounded and declared the following.
The verse continues, “... You are my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Mark added the words, “you are my beloved Son” which means “You, Jesus, are God's esteemed, dear, favorite and worthy of love posterity” “in whom I am well pleased” which means “within whom God takes pleasure in, is favorably inclined toward and prefers”. Mark shared how the “voice” from “heaven” was “God the Father's voice”, and He declared His “love” for and “pleasure” in His Son Jesus.
When we think through Mark's words in this verse,we see how God responded to Jesus' willingness to be “obedient” in “baptism”. God had a plan to “save” people from their sins, and Jesus was to be the One through whom that “salvation” would come. God loves people, and He wants to have a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus. When a person yields to Jesus as their “Savior and Lord” and are “baptized”, they too shall “please” God the Father.
Next time Mark writes how, “immediately the Spirit drove him into the wilderness”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
