Mark wrote how Jesus “charged” Peter, James and John, “that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead. And they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean. And they asked him, saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come? And he answered and told them, Elias verily comes first, and restores all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought. But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him”, and in chapter nine and verse fourteen of his book, Mark shared how Jesus, “saw a great multitude” around His disciples where we read:
And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them,
and the scribes questioning with them.
The verse reads, “And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, ...” Mark began with the words, “And when” which means “and at the time and moment” “he came to his disciples” or “Jesus approached and came forth to His students, pupils and attendants”, “he saw a great multitude about them” which means “Jesus observed and noticed a large crowd around His disciples”. Mark shared how Jesus approached His disciples and notice a large group of people around them.
The verse continues, “... and the scribes questioning with them.” Mark added the words, “and the scribes” which means “and the men learned in the Mosaic law and in the sacred writings, an interpreters and teachers” “questioning” or “asking, inquiring, disputing and discussing” “with them” which means “along with the disciples”. Mark shared how the “religious leaders” known as the “scribes” were “examining” Jesus' disciples.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we discover another story concerning the “religious leaders” and their inquisitiveness concerning Jesus' workings among people. This time the “scribes” targeted Jesus' “students” rather than Jesus Himself. Jesus will attend to them because He as God in the flesh was not intimidated by anyone. God desires to have a relationship with every person, and even when people are “opposed” to Him and His Son Jesus, He continues to be interested in them. Everyone has the opportunity to receive Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and those who are wise will submit themselves to Him and receive “forgiveness of their sins” and “everlasting life” with God.
Next time Mark shares how the people, “when they beheld him, were greatly amazed”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
