Mark wrote how, “all the people, when they beheld” Jesus “were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him. And he asked the scribes, What question you with them? And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto you my son, which has a dumb spirit. And wheresoever he takes him, he tears him: and he foams, and gnashes with his teeth, and pines away: and I spake to your disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not. He answered him, and said, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me”, and in chapter nine and verse twenty of his book, Mark shared how, “the spirit tare him, and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming” where we read:
And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him;
and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.
The verse reads, “And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him.” Mark began with the words, “and they brought him unto him” which means “and Jesus' disciples and the boy's father carried his son to Jesus”: “and when he saw him” or “and at the time and moment the boy observed and noticed Jesus”, “straightway” which means “immediately and forthwith” “the spirit tare him” or “the essence which is devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting mangled and convulsed the boy with epilepsy”. Mark shared how the evil spirit convulsed the boy who went into and epileptic seizure when he saw Jesus.
The verse continues, “and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.” Mark added the words, “and he fell” which means “and the boy was thrust down and prostrated” “on the ground” or “upon the arable land below him”, “and wallowed foaming” which means “and rolling about with the idea of circularity while having froth come from his mouth”. Mark shared how the boy was thrust down to the earth and began to roll around in a circular motion as “foam” or “froth” came from his mouth.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we can imagine how upset this father was for his son's condition, and it is no wonder he sought Jesus for help. The “evil spirit” within this son not only made him “mute”, but also convulsed the boy's body with “epileptic” seizures. Though Jesus' disciples could not help his son, Jesus could. Jesus came into the world to identify with people, live as a person and know what difficulties people face on a personal level. God sent Jesus to “save” people from their sins so they might live with Him forever in righteousness where there will be no sickness nor disease. Those who consider Jesus' power and willingness to “save” should yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” and find Him more than capable to handle any situation they encounter.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus asked the father, “how long is it ago since this came unto him?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
