O Faithless Generation - Mark 9:19

Mark wrote how, “all the people, when they beheld” Jesus “were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him. And he asked the scribes, What question you with them? And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto you my son, which has a dumb spirit. And wheresoever he takes him, he tears him: and he foams, and gnashes with his teeth, and pines away: and I spake to your disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not”, and in chapter nine and verse nineteen of his book, Mark shared how Jesus declares, “O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you?” where we read:

He answered him, and said, O faithless generation,

how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.

The verse reads, “He answered him, and said, O faithless generation, ...” Mark began with the words, “He answered him” which means “Jesus responded and began to speak”, “and said” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to the man with the mute son”, “O faithless” which means “O unfaithful, incredulous and untrustworthy” “generation” or “group of people very much like each other in endowments within a certain age or time”. Mark shared how Jesus responded to the man's statement about His disciples being incapable of “casting out” the “mute spirit” within his son by declaring their “generation” to be an “unbelieving and incredulous” one.

The verse goes on to say, ... how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me. Mark continued with the words, “how long” which means “for what length of time even” “shall I be with you” or “will Jesus be with the faithless generation”? “how long shall I suffer you” which means “for what length of time will Jesus sustain, bear and endure the faithless generation”? “Bring him” or “carry, bear up and move the mute son” “to me” which means “to Jesus Himself”. Mark shared how Jesus questioned for what length of time He would not only “be” with this “generation” but also for what length of time He would “endure and sustain” them. He then told the man to “bring” his son to Him.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus knew how “unbelieving” these people were. Though the Son of the Living God was with them, they did not “believe” He could help them. Jesus desires people to trust Him by knowing He is with them and will sustain them even when their troubles are greater in measure than they. God loves people, and He is “omnipresent” which means “everywhere present”, and those who call on Him through His Son Jesus will not only have a personal relationship with Him but also know He will help them regardless of how great their difficulties or troubles may be.

Next time Mark shares how the boy saw Jesus and, “the spirit tare him, and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
