Mark wrote how Jesus said, “There is no man that has left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life. But many that are first shall be last; and the last first”, and in chapter ten and verse thirty-two of his book, Mark shared how Jesus was, “going up to Jerusalem” with His disciples where we read:
And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him,
The verse reads, “And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid.” Mark began with the words, “and they were in the way” which means “and Jesus and His disciples were on the traveled road or pathway” “going up to Jerusalem” or “ascending to Jerusalem which means set you double peace”; “and Jesus” which means “and Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “went before them” or “proceeded, lead forth and preceded His disciples”: “and they were amazed” which means “and Jesus' disciples were astonished, terrified and frightened”; “and as they followed” or “and while Jesus' disciples joined Jesus at His side”, “they were afraid” which means “Jesus' disciples were struck with fear, amazed and seized with alarm”. Mark shared how Jesus and His disciples were traveling toward Jerusalem, and as Jesus led the way, His disciples were “struck with fear” and “seized with alarm” by His purpose.
The verse continues, “And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him,” Mark added the words, “and he took again the twelve” which means “and Jesus received and acknowledged His twelve disciples once again”, “and began” or “and rehearsed from the beginning” “to tell them” or “to speak about, affirm, exhort and maintain to His disciples” “what things should happen unto him” which means “that He would meet with, occur and come to pass to Jesus”. Mark shared how Jesus gathered His disciples to Himself and began to speak with them about all the “things” which He would encounter.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus and His disciples made their “way up to Jerusalem”, and because the elevation of Jerusalem is higher than any place surrounding it, all who travel there “go up”. Jesus began to speak to His disciples about what would “happen” to Him when they arrived, and because of His purpose and resolve, His disciples were “amazed and frightened”. God the Heavenly Father wants people to be in a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they submit their lives to Him, they shall see more clearly “all things” Jesus endured was for their sake and salvation.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus told His disciples, “the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes” , so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
