Lordship and Authority - Mark 10:42

Mark wrote how Jesus' disciples James and John came to Him saying, “Master, we would that you should do for us whatsoever we shall desire. And he said unto them, What would you that I should do for you? They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on your right hand, and the other on your left hand, in your glory. But Jesus said unto them, You know not what you ask: can you drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, You shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall you be baptized. But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared. And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John”, and in chapter ten and verse forty-two of his book, Mark shared how Jesus taught His disciples, “they which are accounted to rule over the Gentile exercise lordship over them” where we read:

But Jesus called them to him, and said unto them, You know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.

The verse reads, “But Jesus called them to him, and said unto them, You know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them;” Mark began with the words, “But Jesus” which means “however, nevertheless, nonetheless, moreover and Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “called them to him” or “beckoned, invited and bid His disciples to come to Him”, “and said unto them” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciples”, “you know that they which are accounted to rule” or “you disciples have knowledge, perceive, notice an discern that people who are supposed, determined and of reputation to reign, be chief and in first place” “over the Gentiles” which means “above the multitude of individuals of the same nature or genus” “exercise lordship” or “subdue, hold in subjection and are masters” “over them” which means “above the Gentiles”. Mark shared how Jesus referred to people who hold leadership positions among other people in the world “subdue and hold” them in “subjection”.

The verse goes on to say, and their great ones exercise authority upon them. Mark continued with the words, “and their great ones” which means “and the Gentiles' preeminent people” “exercise authority” or “wield power and privilege” “upon them” which refers to “on the Gentiles who are in leadership”. Mark shared how Jesus noted the higher ranks of “power” as He shared how the great “leaders” have “authorities” over them as well.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus is teaching His disciples the way the world manages “power and authority”. Those in charge rule over those beneath them, and those who are over a certain section of people, have someone to whom they give account. Lordship and Rulership are predominant all throughout the world. Governments, businesses, households and communities each have “governing authorities”. “Lording” over others seems to be the norm. Jesus will say more about these things in the next few verses, but let it suffice for now to know that God is the Supreme Authority, and He sent His Son to be “Savior and Lord” of the world. Those who yield to Him shall find His methods of “rule” much greater than those demonstrated in the world today.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus taught His disciples, “whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister” , so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
