Why Do You Call Jesus Good? - Mark 10:18

Mark wrote when Jesus, “he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?”, and in chapter ten and verse eighteen of his book, Mark shared how Jesus asked the man, “why do you call me good? where we read:

And Jesus said unto him, Why do you call me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.

The verse reads, “And Jesus said unto him, Why do you call me good? Mark began with the words, “and Jesus” which refers to “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “said unto him” or “uttered, declared and proclaimed to the man who questioned Him”, “why do you” which means “for what reason and cause did the man” “call me good” or “affirm, maintain and mention that Jesus is pleasant, agreeable, joyful, happy excellent and distinguished”? Mark shared how Jesus asked the man for the reason he thought Jesus was “pleasant, agreeable and distinguished”.

The verse continues , there is none good but one, that is, God. Mark added the words, “there is none good” which means “there exists not one person who is pleasant, agreeable, joyful, happy excellent and distinguished” “but one” or “except for One certain person”, “that is, God” which means “that One is the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Mark shared how Jesus declared that “no one” except God Himself is “good”.

When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus made a statement in His declaration concerning His being “good”. He was either saying, “He was not good” or that “He is God”. Since only One person is “good”, and that person is “God”, Jesus either was not “good” or He is in fact “God”. God the Father came to the earth in the form of Jesus Christ to save mankind from their sins. When Jesus performed as He did, He exemplified the “goodness” of God, and now all who believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” shall be “saved” and receive “everlasting life”. Oh how “good” Jesus really is to all who yield to Him.

Next time Mark shares how Jesus tells the man, “you know the commandments” , so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
