What Did You Dispute? - Mark 9:33

Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “departed from there, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it. For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day. But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him”, and in chapter nine and verse thirty-three of his book, Mark shared how Jesus asked His disciples, “what was it that you disputed among yourselves by the way?” where we read:

And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them,

What was it that you disputed among yourselves by the way?

The verse reads, “And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, ... Mark began with the words, “and he came” which means “and Jesus entered” “to Capernaum” or “into Capernaum which was a flourishing city of Galilee situated on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee or Lake of Gennesaret, near the place where the Jordan flows into the lake which means village of comfort”: “and being in the house” which means “and appearing within the habitation, abode and dwelling place” “he asked them” or “Jesus inquired of and questioned His disciples”. Mark shared how Jesus began to ask His disciples the following question when He was within the “house” in “Capernaum”.

The verse continues, “... What was it that you disputed among yourselves by the way? Mark added the words, “what was it that you disputed” or “what did Jesus' disciples reason, deliberate, consider and reckon thoroughly” “among yourselves” which means “towards and with the disciples themselves” “by the way” or “along the traveled road and pathway”. Mark shared how Jesus questioned His disciples about what they were “deliberating” upon as they walked along the road or pathway.

When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus was aware of what His disciples were discussing as they walked. Jesus wanted them to tell Him because He desired to teach them “His way” rather than the natural way for people to think. God loves people, and His ways are beyond their ways. (See Isaiah 55:8) God sent His Son Jesus to be the “Savior” of the world, and when He died on the cross, Jesus paid the price for the “sins” of everyone. Every person who believes and trusts in Him shall be “saved” and live with God forever.

Next time Mark shares how His disciples, “held their peace: for … they had disputed … who should be the greatest”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
