Mark wrote how Jesus “charged” Peter, James and John, “that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead. And they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean. And they asked him, saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come? And he answered and told them, Elias verily comes first, and restores all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought. But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him. And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them”, and in chapter nine and verse fifteen of his book, Mark shared how the people, “when they beheld him, were greatly amazed” around His disciples where we read:
And straightway all the people, when they beheld him,
were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him.
The verse reads, “And straightway all the people, when they beheld him, ...” Mark began with the words, “And straightway” which means “and immediately and forthwith” “all the people” or “each, every, the whole and everyone of the people within the crowd”, “when they beheld him” which means “at the time and moment they observed, perceived, noticed and discerned Jesus”. Mark shared how every person within the “multitude” observed Jesus and had the following reaction to Him.
The verse goes on to say, “... were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him.” Mark continued with the words, “and were greatly amazed” which means “were astounded and sorely astonished”, “and running to him” or “and hastening to meet or join Jesus” “saluted him” which means “received Jesus joyfully, welcomed Him and wished Him well”. Mark shared how the people within the crowd were “greatly astonished” by Jesus and “ran” to Him to greet Him “joyfully”.
When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see the reaction of the people in the “crowd” when they saw Jesus. Not only were they “greatly amazed” by Him, but they actually began to “run” toward Him to greet Him “joyfully”. God loves people to be this way, and because He desires to have a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, He wanted to remove “sin” from their lives. “Sin” separates people from God, and when Jesus died upon the cross to pay for the “sins” of mankind and was resurrected from the grave three days later, people may now be “forgiven” and “saved” from their sinful lives. Those who are wise will greet Jesus in the same manner as this multitude and yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus, “asked the scribes, what question you with them?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
