Mark wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles: And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again. And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that you should do for us whatsoever we shall desire”, and in chapter ten and verse thirty-six of his book, Mark shared how Jesus asked them, “what would you that I should do for you?” where we read:
And he said unto them, What would you that I should do for you?
The verse reads, “And he said unto them, ... ” Mark began with the words, “and he said” which means “and Jesus uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked” “unto them” or “to His disciples James and John”. Mark shared how Jesus responded to James and John with the following question.
The verse continues, “... What would you that I should do for you?” Mark added the words, “what would you” which means “what is it that you James and John” “that I should do for you” or “that Jesus would provide or perform for James and John”? Mark shared how Jesus wanted to know what “James and John” desired of Him.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus wanted to know what His disciples “James and John” wanted from Him. Although Jesus was aware of the attitudes and behaviors of His disciples, He would allow them make their requests. Jesus never minded the questions from His believers, He only desired that they yield themselves to His “better judgment” when He answered. God the Father wants every person to be in a relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and when they submit themselves to Him, He will not only ask what they desire but also lead them in the correct direction they should go.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus answered, “grant unto us that we may sit, one on your right hand, and the other on your left hand, in your glory” , so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
