Mark wrote when Jesus, “he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why do you call me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. You know the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honor your father and mother”, and in chapter ten and verse twenty of his book, Mark shared how the man, “answered and said unto him, Master, all these things have I observed from my youth” where we read:
And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.
The verse reads, “And he answered and said unto him, ...” Mark began with the words, “and he answered” which means “and the man who questioned Jesus responded and began to speak” “and said” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto him” which means “to Jesus”. Mark shared how the man with the question to Jesus began to respond to His words concerning the “commandments” of God the Father .
The verse continues, “... Master, all these have I observed from my youth.” Mark added the word, “Master” which means “teacher”, “all these” or “each, every, the whole and everyone of the commandments Jesus mentioned” “have I observed” which means “the man obeyed, kept watch over, guarded and taken care not to violate” “from my youth” or “from the time the man was youthful”. Mark shared how the man answered Jesus that he kept all the “commandments” listed by Jesus.
When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we see how this man believed himself from the time he was a child to have kept all the “person to person” “commandments” of God. This is quite the accomplishment particularly if we consider keeping the “spirit of the law” as well. God the Father knows the truth about sins and violation to His “commandments”, and though this man believed he kept them all, he will soon discover he needed more to be a follower of Jesus.
Next time Mark shares Jesus tells the man, “one thing you lack” , so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
