Mark wrote how the “Pharisees” came to Jesus and asked Him, “Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him. And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away. And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife. And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder. And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter”, and in chapter ten and verse eleven of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, commits adultery against her” where we read:
And he said unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife,
and marry another, commits adultery against her.
The verse reads, “And he said unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, ...” Mark began with the words, “and he said” which means “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto them” or “to His disciples”, “whosoever” which means “whatever man” “shall put away” or “will dismiss, bid depart, release and divorce” “his wife” which refers to “the man's female spouse”. Mark shared how Jesus began to answer His disciple's question by referring to the man who “divorces” his “wife”.
The verse goes on to say, “... and marry another, commits adultery against her.” Mark continues with the words, “and marry” which means “and take's to be his wife” “another” which refers to “another woman”, “commits adultery” or “engages in and perpetuates the sin of adultery” “against her” which means “in opposition to his wife”. Mark shared how a man who divorces his wife and marries another woman actually commits the “sin of adultery” against his wife.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we discover why Jesus said “what God has joined together, let no man put asunder”. According to Jesus, when a man “puts his wife away” and marries another woman, he actually “commits” the “sin of adultery” against his wife. It's as though he is still “married” to his first wife. Jesus shared the “righteous ways of God”, and though people made laws, traditions and rules that allowed for them to violate God's ways, they were “in error and sin” because of it. God forgives “sins”, and when people fail to keep His laws, if they turn to Jesus, ask forgiveness for their sins and repent of their ways, He will “forgive” them and extend His grace to them so they might live forever with Him even when it is the “sin of adultery”.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus says, “if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she commits adultery”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
