Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that you disputed among yourselves by the way? But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest. And he sat down, and called the twelve, and said unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all”, and in chapter nine and verse thirty-six of his book, Mark shared how Jesus, “took a child, and set him in the midst of them” where we read:
And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them:
and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,
The verse reads, “And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them:” Mark began with the words, “and he took a child” which means “and Jesus procured a young boy”, “and set him” or “and placed the boy” “in the midst of them” which means “in the middle of His disciples”. Mark shared how Jesus brought a little boy into the middle of His disciples.
The verse goes on to say, “and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,” Mark continued with the words, “and when” which means “and at the time and moment” “he had taken him in his arms” or “Jesus embraced the little boy”, “he said unto them” which means “Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciples” the following words. Mark shared how Jesus embraced the little boy and said the words in the next verse to His disciples.
When we think through Mark's words in this verse, we discover how Jesus was so accessible that a child felt comfortable in His company. The “little boy” was to be an example to His disciples because Jesus knew how to communicate effectively with them. God loves children, and His desire is to have a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus. Those who yield their lives to Him shall find Him “accessible”, ready to forgive them for their “sinful ways” and willing to provide them with “everlasting life”.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus said, “whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receives me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
