Mark wrote how, “the Pharisees came to” Jesus “and asked”, “Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him. And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away. And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female”, and in chapter ten and verse seven of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said a man will, “leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife” where we read:
For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;
The verse reads, “For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, ...” Mark began with the words, “For this cause” which means “on account and for the sake of God making people male and female” “shall a man” or “will a male human being” “leave his father” which means “depart from, abandon and forsake the man's male progenitor and ancestor” “and mother” or “and forsake the man's female progenitor and ancestor”. Mark shared how Jesus said because people were created by God as “male” or “female”, the “male son” will “depart” from his parents.
The verse goes on to say, “... and cleave to his wife;” Mark continued with the words, “and cleave” which means “be glued together, stick to and adhere closely” “to his wife” or “to the man's female spouse”. Mark shared how Jesus said the “man” departs from his “parents” and becomes “glued to” his “female” spouse.
When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see God's design for marriage. When a “man” decided to “marry” a “wife”, the man and woman were “glued and stuck” together like two pieces of paper. When that glue dries, and the two pieces of paper are attempted to be separated, they leave remnants of each page upon each other. God's design for marriage was for two people to be together until “death” parts them, and they are to “cleave” to one another until that time. Jesus pre-dated the “law of Moses” to share God's view on “marriage”, and He declared that a “man leaves” his parents and “cleaves” to his “wife”. Those who are wise will take heed.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus added, “they twain shall be one flesh”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
