Mark wrote how a man within a multitude of people said to Jesus, “Master, I have brought unto you my son, which has a dumb spirit. And wheresoever he takes him, he tears him: and he foams, and gnashes with his teeth, and pines away: and I spake to your disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not. He answered him, and said, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me. And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child. And ofttimes it has cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if you can do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. Jesus said unto him, If you can believe, all things are possible to him that believes”, and in chapter nine and verse twenty-four of his book, Mark shared how,“the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help my unbelief” where we read:
And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears,
Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.
The verse reads, “And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, ...” Mark began with the words, “and straightway” which means “and immediately and forthwith” “the father” or “the male progenitor and ancestor” “of the child” which means “belonging to the son who was possessed by a spirit” “cried out” or “spoke with a loud voice, shrieked, exclaimed and screamed”, “and said” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed” “with tears” or “with teardrops flowing from his eyes”. Mark shared how the father of the possessed son “shrieked and screamed loudly” as “tears” flowed from his eyes.
The verse continues, “... Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.” Mark added the word, “Lord” which means “One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”, “I believe” or “the man was persuaded, thought to be true, had confidence in and trusted”; “help my unbelief” which means “succor and bring aid to the man's lack of persuasion, thinking to be true, confidence and trust”. Mark shared how the man “yelled loudly” that He “believed” that “all things are possible”, however, he knew he had a “lack” of belief and he appealed to Jesus to “help”.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we can almost imagine the desperation within this man's voice. He heard Jesus declare, “all things are possible to him that believes”, and though he recognized some faith within himself, he also realized there was some doubt as well. God knows we sometimes have difficulty believing Him, and because we do, He is ready to “help” us even when we doubt Him. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to be the “Savior” of all who “believe” in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and should there be some “doubt” within us, we may appeal for “help” and find Him ready and able to meet our need.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus, “rebuked the foul spirit”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
