A Son with a Dumb Spirit - Mark 9:17

Mark wrote how people from a multitude, “when they beheld” Jesus “were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him. And he asked the scribes, What question you with them?”, and in chapter nine and verse seventeen of his book, Mark shared how, “one of the multitude answered and said, I have brought to you my son, which has a dumb spirit” where we read:

And one of the multitude answered and said,

Master, I have brought unto you my son, which has a dumb spirit;

The verse reads, “And one of the multitude answered and said, ...Mark began with the words, “And one of the multitude” which means “and a certain and particular man within the crowd” “answered” or “responded and began to speak” “and said” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed”. Mark shared how a man within the “multitude” interrupted Jesus' question to the “scribes” and began to speak to Him.

The verse goes on to say, ... Master, I have brought unto you my son, which has a dumb spirit; Mark continued with the word, “Master” which means “teacher”, “I have brought unto you” or “the man carried, bore up and lead” “my son” which means “the man's male offspring and prodigy”, “which has a dumb spirit” or “who possesses a speechless or mute essence, devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting”. Mark shared how the man in the multitude said He “carried” his son to Jesus who was “mute” by an evil spirit.

When we meditate upon Mark's words in this verse, we see the desperation and belief of this man with a “mute” son. He believed if he took his son to Jesus, Jesus could help Him. It is interesting to note that this was the event waiting for Jesus, Peter, James and John after the “mount of transfiguration”, and yet, Jesus is ready to address the situation. There are “highs” and “lows” when a person follows Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and Jesus is present in every one. God loves people, and He desires to have a relationship with them through His Son Jesus. Those who are wise will realize Jesus is the one to “run to” whenever there are difficulties like this man's “mute” son, and they shall find Him ready and able to meet their need.

Next time Mark shares how the man said his son, “is torn, foams, gnashes with his teeth, and pines away”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
