Mark wrote how Jesus said, “every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt”, and in chapter nine and verse fifty of his book, Mark shared how Jesus said, “salt is good, but if the salt has lost his saltiness, wherewith will you season it?” where we read:
Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will you season it?
Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.
The verse reads, “Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will you season it?” Mark began with the words, “Salt is good” which means “seasoning and purifying salt is excellent, choice, surpassing and precious”: “but if the salt” or “however, nevertheless, nonetheless, moreover and whether that seasoning and purifying salt” “have lost his saltiness” which means “has began to be, happened, arisen and appeared without saltiness, seasoning and purifying”, “wherewith will you season it” or “how and by what way will those listening to prepare, arrange and make food to be savory”? Mark shared how Jesus questioned how a person would “season or purify” food if the “salt” has lost it's savor.
The verse goes on to say, “Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.” Mark continued with the words, “have salt in yourselves” which means “hold, own and possess seasoning and purifying salt within your own selves”, “and have peace” or “and cultivate, keep and be in harmony” “one with another” which means “one person with another person”. Mark shared how those who follow Him are to “season, purify and have peace” within themselves and toward others.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Jesus speaks to the value of “salt” within a person's life. In Jesus' day, “Salt” was used both to “season, preserve and purify” meats and foods. Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” (See Matthew 5:13), and when a person yields their life to Jesus Christ, they become the “salt” of God. Their lives are to be “seasoned and purified” through His word, and when a person submits their life to Him, they begin to affect others in “purity” and “seasoning” as well.
Next time we begin a new chapter and see Mark shares how Jesus, “came into the coasts of Judaea by the farther side of Jordan”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
