Mark wrote how Jesus and His disciples, “came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, you Son of David, have mercy on me. And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, You Son of David, have mercy on me. And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calls you”, and in chapter ten and verse fifty of his book, Mark shared how Bartimaeus, “came to Jesus” where we read:
And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.
The verse reads, “And he, casting away his garment, rose, ...” Mark began with the words, “and he” which refers to “Bartimaeus”, “casting away his garment” or “and loosing and throwing off his cloak, mantle, tunic or upper garment”, “rose” which means “raised from his seated position”. Mark shared how “Bartimaeus” threw off his outer garment and raised up from his seated position.
The verse goes on to say, “... and came to Jesus.” Mark continued with the words, “and came” which means “and appeared before and showed himself” “to Jesus” or “to the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation”. Mark shared how Bartimaeus “appeared” before Jesus after he rose from his seated position.
When we consider Mark's words in this verse, we see how Bartimaeus responded to Jesus' call. No one was able to make him “be quiet” or “still” as he continued to call out to Jesus, and when Jesus desired to have Bartimaeus come before Him, Bartimaeus obeyed. Many times people oppose those who are invited to “come to Jesus”, and those who are invited should ignore all resistance and simply yield to Him. God's way of relating to people is through His Son Jesus, and those who are wise will believe and trust in Jesus as the “Savior and Lord” of their life.
Next time Mark shares how Jesus asks Bartimaeus, “what do you want me to do to you?” , so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
