The apostle John wrote, “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spoke he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet. Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?”, and in chapter seven and verse forty-two of his book, John shared how some of the people asked, “has not the scripture said, that Christ comes of the seed of David?” where we read:
Has not the scripture said, That Christ comes of the seed of David,
and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?
The verse reads, “Has not the scripture said, That Christ comes of the seed of David, ...” John began with the words, “Has not the scriptures said” or “have not the written Holy Word of God uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “That Christ” which means “that the Messiah and Son of God” “comes of the seed of David” or “arises and appears from the offspring and progeny belonging to King David of Israel whose name means beloved”. John shared how the people referred to the “Holy Scriptures'” declaration that the “Messiah” would arise from the lineage of “King David” of Israel.
The verse continues, “... and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?” John added the words, “and out of the town” which means “and separate and apart from the city, dwelling place and habitation” “of Bethlehem” or “belonging to Bethlehem which means the house of bread and was a village about six miles (10 kilometers) south of Jerusalem” “where David was” which means “in the location and place King David whose name means beloved”? John shared how the people believed the “Holy Scripture” declared that the “Messiah” would arise from the “village of Bethlehem” which was the original dwelling place of King David.
When we think through upon John's words in this verse, we learn how the people knew some of the “Holy Scriptures” concerning the origin of the “Messiah”. Jesus was “born” in “Bethlehem” but was raised in “Nazareth” which was in “Galilee”. This caused those observing Jesus to believe He was not the “Christ” of God. Many people are unaware of the details about the Christ found in the scriptures, and rather than yielding to the Messiah whom Jesus proved Himself to be, they trust in what they have heard. Those who are wise will carefully examine “all” the scriptures concerning the “Christ” and will find Jesus is the One who is worthy to be worshiped, obeyed and adored.
Next time John shares how, “there was a division among the people”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
