The apostle John wrote, “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spoke he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.) Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet. Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? Has not the scripture said, That Christ comes of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?”, and in chapter seven and verse forty-three of his book, John shared how, “there was a division among the people” where we read:
So there was a division among the people because of him.
The verse reads, “So there was a division among the people ...” John began with the words, “So there was a division” or “then, therefore and wherefore there existed a dissension, split and gap” “among the people” which means “between the Jewish people”. John shared how the differences in opinion among the “Jewish people” caused them to be “divided”.
The verse goes on to say, “... because of him.” John continued with the words, “because” which means “since and on account” “of him” or “of Jesus”. John shared how the reason for the “dissension” among the people was because of Jesus.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how “division” was caused among the people who discussed Jesus because they had varying opinions as to who He was and from where He came. Those varying opinions occur even today, and as people attempt to determine whether Jesus was indeed the Christ of God, dissension, division and separation becomes the norm. The Bible is the authority concerning Jesus, and when a person carefully studies all that is written about the Messiah, they shall discover that Jesus fulfilled every detail of the prophecies concerning Him. Those who are wise will yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and they will be granted forgiveness of their sins and everlasting life with God.
Next time John shares how, “some of them would have taken him”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
