Jesus Speaks Boldly and They Say Nothing - John 7:26

The apostle John wrote how in the middle of the feast, and He asked the people there, “If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are you angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day? Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?”, and in chapter seven and verse twenty-six of his book, John shared how some of the people in Jerusalem said, “he speaks boldly, and they say nothing unto him” where we read:

But, lo, he speaks boldly, and they say nothing unto him.

Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?

The verse reads,But, lo, he speaks boldly, and they say nothing unto him.” John began with the words, “but, lo, he speaks boldly” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover, look and behold, he, Jesus, utters, talks and proclaims words freely, unreservedly, fearlessly and with full assurance”, “and they say nothing” which means “and the Jewish religious leaders utter, declare and proclaim not one thing” “unto him” or “to Jesus”. John shared how the Jewish people noticed how Jesus “spoke openly with fearlessness” and the “Jewish religious leaders who wanted Him dead” did nothing about it.

The verse continues, Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?” John added the words, “do the rulers know indeed” which means “have the Jewish religious leaders, chiefs and commanders even so and also understand, perceive and have knowledge” “that this is the very Christ” or “that Jesus is most certainly and truly the Messiah and Son of God”? John shared how the “Jewish people in Jerusalem” wondered if their “commanders and leaders” “understood” that Jesus was the true “Messiah and Christ” of God.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how the people in Jerusalem were in wonder as to who Jesus really was. They knew the “religious leaders” wanted Jesus dead, but the leaders were saying nothing about Jesus openly and fearlessly speaking. This caused the people to question if their leaders knew Jesus was actually the “Christ of God”. Each person has to determine in their own mind and heart who Jesus is. Is He the “Christ and Son of God” or “is He a fraud”? The decision will determine a person's “eternal life”, and God desires to have people believe and trust in His Son Jesus so they may live forever with Him. Let all who read these words consider who Jesus is.

Next time John shares how some of the people in Jerusalem say, “we know where this man is from”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
