The apostle John wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “I have yet many things to say unto you, but you cannot bear them now”, and in chapter sixteen and verse thirteen of his book John shared how Jesus told His disciples what happens, “when he, the Spirit of truth, is come” where we read:
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.
The verse reads, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth:” John began with Jesus' words, “howbeit when he” which means “moreover at the time and moment he, the Comforter”, “the Spirit of truth” or “the third person of the triune God, the Holy Spirit, coequal, co-eternal with the Father and the Son who speaks truthfully and what is true in any matter under consideration”, “he will guide you” which means “the Spirit of truth will lead, give guidance to and show the way to you, disciples of Jesus” “into all truth” or “toward each, every, the whole and everything that is true in any matter under consideration”. John shared how Jesus said the responsibility and duty of the “Holy Spirit” would be to “lead” His disciples into everything that is “truthful”.
The verse continues, “for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come.”. John added the words, “for he shall not speak” or “because, since and on account that he, the Spirit of truth, will in no way utter, articulate or disclose thoughts” “of himself” which means “pertaining to His own self”; “but whatsoever he shall hear” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover whatever the Spirit of truth will be endowed with the faculty of hearing, perceiving, understanding and noticing”, “that shall he speak” which means “that which the Spirit of truth hears will be that which He utters, declares and proclaims”: “and he will show you” or “and the Spirit of truth will make known to, report and bring tidings to you, disciples of Jesus” “things to come” which means “events and circumstances that will arise, show themselves and be established”. John shared how Jesus said the “Spirit of truth” would not “articulate thoughts” concerning Himself, but whatever He perceived and understood would be what He would say. His responsibility would be to disclose “events and occurrences” that would happen in the future of the disciples of Jesus.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn what Jesus said would be the responsibility of the “Spirit of truth”. First, the “Spirit of truth” would lead Jesus' disciples into whatever is “true” in any circumstance. Second, the “Spirit of truth” would not “say things” about Himself, but whatever He “heard”, He would proclaim. Finally, the “Spirit of truth” would “disclose” things that would occur in the disciples' future. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to be the “Savior and Lord” of everyone who believes and trusts in Him. The “Spirit of truth” or “Holy Spirit” does not focus upon Himself, but declares things revealed to Him. God's Holy Spirit shows people who Jesus is, and those who are wise will realize the “Spirit of truth's” role is to tell the world about Jesus Christ and the “salvation” that is offered through Him.
Next time we see John share how Jesus says, “He shall glorify me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
