The apostle John wrote how Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world gives, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid”, and in chapter fourteen and verse twenty-eight of his book John shared how Jesus told His disciples, “you have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you”, where we read:
You have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If you loved me, you would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
The verse reads, “You have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you.” John began with the words, “you have heard” which means “you, disciples of Jesus, have been endowed with the faculty of hearing, perceiving, understanding and discerning” “how I said unto you” or “in what way I, Jesus, uttered, declared and proclaimed to you, disciples of Jesus”, “I go away” which means “I, Jesus, depart and will leave”, “and come again unto you” or “and arise and appear another time to you, disciples of Jesus”. John shared how Jesus reminded His disciples of how they heard that He was going to depart from them and return to them another time.
The verse goes on to say, “If you loved me, you would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. ” John continued with the words, “If you loved me” which means “whether and in case you, disciples of Jesus, were fond of, were well pleased with and loved dearly me, Jesus”, “you would rejoice” or “you, disciples of Jesus, would be glad, rejoice exceedingly and thrive”, “because I said” which means “since and on account that I, Jesus, uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “I go unto the Father” or “I, Jesus, depart and leave to the Heavenly Father God”: “for my Father” which means “because, since and on account that my, Jesus, Heavenly Father God” “is greater than I” or “exists as larger and stronger”. John shared how Jesus told His disciples “if” they were “pleased with and dearly loved” with Him, they would be exceedingly glad that He was going to His Father God since God the Father was “larger and stronger” than He.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus was telling His disciples that He was going to be with His Heavenly Father and away from them. Jesus was preparing His disciples for His absence, and since He was going to His “Father”, they should be “rejoicing”. God the Father was in a greater place than Jesus while He was on the earth, and when Jesus went to Him, His disciples would be in an advantageous position. God loves people, and He desires to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. When they yield their lives to Him, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life. Let all who read these words rejoice that Jesus went to His Father and returned because when He did, every person now has the opportunity to know Him as “Savior and Lord”.
Next time John shares how Jesus tells His disciples, “now I have told you before it come to pass”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
