We Cannot Tell What Jesus Said - John 16:18

The apostle John wrote how Jesus told His disciples, All things that the Father has are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall show it unto you. A little while, and you shall not see me: and again, a little while, and you shall see me, because I go to the Father. Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he said unto us, A little while, and you shall not see me: and again, a little while, and you shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?”, and in chapter sixteen and verse eighteen of his book John shared how Jesus' disciples say, “we cannot tell what he said” where we read:

They said therefore, What is this that he said, A little while? we cannot tell what he said.

The verse reads,They said therefore, What is this that he said, A little while? John began with the words, “they said therefore” which means “wherefore, consequently and on this account they, the disciples of Jesus, uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked”, “what is this that he said” or “what does Jesus mean by uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “a little while” which means “a brief or short amount of time”? John shared how Jesus' disciples questioned what Jesus meant by a “brief or short time”.

The verse goes on say, we cannot tell what he said. John continued with the words, “we cannot tell or ”we, the disciples of Jesus, are unable, incapable and without power to perceive, understand, discover or discern “what he said” which means “that which he, Jesus, uttered, declared and proclaimed”. John shared how Jesus' disciples were unable to “perceive or understand” what He meant by saying “a little while”.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus' disciples were totally unaware of what He meant by saying “a little while”. Jesus was informing His disciples concerning the time He would be away from them as He went to the cross, but also when He would be with them again after He resurrected from the dead. Jesus' plan was to secure a place for every person who believes and trusts in Him for all eternity, and though His disciples were to be separated for a “short time”, they would be with Him forever. God loves people, and His desire is to spend all eternity with them through His Son Jesus. As a person yields their life to Jesus, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life with Him in Heaven. Those who are wise will attempt to understand what Jesus meant by “a little while” and surrender their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.

Next time John shares how Jesus says to His disciples, “do you inquire among yourselves of that I said”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
