Now You Speak Plainly - John 16:29

The apostle John wrote how Jesus told His disciples, the time comes, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall show you plainly of the Father. At that day you shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you. For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father”, and in chapter sixteen and verse twenty-nine of his book John shared how Jesus' disciples told Him, “now speak plainly, and speak no proverb” where we read:

His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speak you plainly, and speak no proverb.

The verse reads,His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speak you plainly, ... John began with the words, “His disciples said unto him” which means “Jesus' students, pupils and attendants uttered, declared and proclaimed to him, Jesus” “Lo, now speak you plainly” or “behold, see, at this time, utter, declare and proclaim you, Jesus, freely, without reserve, ambiguity or concealment”. John shared how Jesus' disciples affirmed that He was “talking” to them without ambiguity or concealment.

The verse continues, ... and speak no proverb. John added the words, “and speak” or “and utter, declare and proclaim” “no proverb” which means “not in any way a saying which shadows forth some didactic truth”. John shared how Jesus' disciples added that He was not making a declaration that had some hidden didactic truth within it.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus' disciples declared that they understood what Jesus was saying by “coming from God the Father” and returning to Him again. Although they really did not perceive what He was saying, they declared that they did. Jesus was to return to His Father God after dying upon the cross and rising from the dead three days later. His disciples at this point did not know what He meant, but they made their proclamation anyway. God knows what He is going to do, and His plan for mankind is not always manifested at the time. He keeps things to Himself but always has the best interest of those who love Him and His Son Jesus in mind. Those who yield their lives to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” trust Him with the direction for their lives, and there is no greater way to live than in the path that is known unto God, but not necessarily known unto man.

Next time John shares how Jesus' disciples say to Jesus, “now we are sure that you know all things”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
