The Sin of Unbelief - John 16:9

The apostle John wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment”, and in chapter sixteen and verse nine of his book John shared how Jesus told His disciples, “of sin, because they believe not on me” where we read:

Of sin, because they believe not on me;

The verse reads, “Of sin, because they believe not on me;” John began with Jesus' words, “of sin” which means “pertaining to sin which means missing the mark, error, mistakes and wrongs”, “because they believe not” or “since and on account that they, people in the earth, do not trust in, rely upon, cling to or have confidence” “on me” which means “in me, Jesus”. John shared how Jesus said the “Comforter Holy Spirit” would convict people of their “sin” because they do not “trust in and rely upon” Him.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn why the “Comforter” was sent by Jesus. The “Comforter Holy Spirit's” role is to convict people of their “sin”. “All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God”, (See Romans 3:23) and the “Holy Spirit” convinces people they have “sin, error, wrong, mistakes and wrongs”. This shows them their need for a “Savior” because “the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”. (See Romans 6:23). When the “Holy Spirit” convicts someone of their “sin”, they may surrender their lives to Jesus Christ who will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life. Those who are wise will yield to the “Comforter Holy Spirit” and submit themselves to Jesus.
