The apostle John wrote how Jesus told His disciples, “the time comes, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall show you plainly of the Father. At that day you shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you. For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speak you plainly, and speak no proverb. Now are we sure that you know all things, and need not that any man should ask you: by this we believe that you came forth from God”, and in chapter sixteen and verse thirty-one of his book John shared how Jesus asked His disciples, “do you now believe?” where we read:
Jesus answered them, Do you now believe?
The verse reads, “Jesus answered them, ...” John began with the words, “Jesus answered” which means “the Son of God, the Savior of the World and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation responded, began to speak and asked” “them” or “His disciples” the following question. John shared how “Jesus” began to ask His disciples the following question.
The verse continues, “... Do you now believe?” John added the words, “do you now” or “do you, disciples of Jesus, at this time” “believe” which means “think to be true, are persuaded and have confidence in what Jesus said”? John shared how Jesus questioned whether His disciples were “persuaded” that He knew all things and came “from God”.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we discover how Jesus questioned His disciples as to whether they truly “believed” that He came from God and knew all things. Though they were familiar with Jesus, they really did not understand what He meant by leaving them for a while and reappearing again. God loves people, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to “save” them from their sins. Jesus went to the cross to pay the price of death for the sins of all mankind, and although there would be sorrow for a while when He left His disciples, His leaving lead to their “salvation”. Those who are wise will carefully consider Jesus' question, “Do you now believe?”
Next time John shares how Jesus tells His disciples, “Behold, the hour comes, yes, is now come, that you shall be scattered”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
