Asking Jesus Nothing - John 16:23

The apostle John wrote how Jesus told His disciples, you shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and you shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. A woman when she is in travail has sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembers no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. And you now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man takes from you”, and in chapter sixteen and verse twenty-three of his book John shared how Jesus told His disciples, “in that day you shall ask me nothing” where we read:

And in that day you shall ask me nothing.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever you shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

The verse reads,And in that day you shall ask me nothing. John began with the words, “and in that day” which means “and at the season or time period when the disciples of Jesus will be filled with joy” “you shall ask me nothing” or “you, disciples of Jesus, will inquire, entreat and desire of me, Jesus, not one thing”. John shared how Jesus said His disciples would not have to “question” Him for anything when their “joy” would come because He returned to them.

The verse continues, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever you shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. John added the words, “Verily, verily” or “truly, truly or surely, surely”, “I say unto you” which means “I, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim to you, disciples of Jesus”, “whatsoever you shall ask” or “whatever and however much you, disciples of Jesus will inquire, entreat and desire of” “the Father” which means “the Heavenly Father God” “in my name” or “within the name of Jesus and everything which the name covers including the thoughts or feelings which are aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing and remembering”, “he will give it you” which means “he, the Heavenly Father God, shall grant, bestow, furnish and supply to you, disciples of Jesus”. John shared how Jesus certifiably declared to His disciples that “whatever” they asked His Father God in His “name” the Heavenly Father would supply to them.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus' disciples were to have access to Jesus' Heavenly Father God after He left them. Rather than ask Jesus for what they needed, they would now ask “God the Father” for their needed supplies. God loves people, and He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for their sins so they would no longer be separated from Him. When they submit themselves to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life with God. While they remain on the earth, the disciples of Jesus may go to the Heavenly Father in Jesus' name and request whatever they need.

Next time John shares how Jesus instructs His disciples, “ask, and you shall receive, that your joy may be full”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
