Jesus Giving Eternal Life - John 17:2

The apostle John wrote how Jesus, “lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify your Son, that your Son also may glorify you, and in chapter seventeen and verse two of his book John shared how Jesus told His Father God, “you have given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as you have given him” where we read:

As you have given him power over all flesh,

that he should give eternal life to as many as you have given him.

The verse reads,As you have given him power over all flesh, ... John began with the words, “As you have given him power” which means “in the same manner and likeness you, God the Heavenly Father, have granted, bestowed, furnished and supplied to him, Jesus, authority, jurisdiction, strength and right” “over all flesh” or “above each, every, the whole and everyone of the living creatures or humans”. John shared how Jesus acknowledged to His Heavenly Father God how He provided Him with “authority and right” over every living human being.

The verse continues, ... that he should give eternal life to as many as you have given him. John added the words, “that he should give eternal life” or “that he, Jesus, could grant, bestow, furnish and supply never ceasing, without end and everlasting life which is real and genuine, active and vigorous, devoted to God, blessed and in the portion even in this world of those who put their trust in Christ, but after the resurrection to be consummated by new accessions (among them a more perfect body), and to last for ever” “to as many” which means “to each, every, the whole and everyone” “as you have given him” or “that you, God the Heavenly Father, have granted, bestowed, furnished and supplied to him, Jesus”. John shared how Jesus said He was granted the ability to extend “everlasting life” to every person whom God the Heavenly Father granted to Him.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how God the Heavenly Father extended to Jesus the “authority and jurisdiction” over every person, and He could grant “everlasting life” to as many as His Father God gave Him. God's desire is to save people from their sins through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their life to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive their sins and grant them eternal life with God in Heaven. God loves people, and His purpose for sending His Son Jesus to the world was to offer them “salvation” through believing and trusting in Him. Those who submit to Jesus will receive Jesus' gift of eternal life, and all who are wise will surrender their “eternal” lives to Him.

Next time John shares how Jesus prays, “this is life eternal, that they might know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
