John the apostle wrote how, “many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written, that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you might have life through his name. After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise showed he himself”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse two of his book John shared how Jesus' disciples were gathered again where we read:
There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee,
and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.
The verse begins, “There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, ...” John began with the words, “there were together Simon Peter” which means “some of Jesus' disciples including Simon whose name means a little stone, Peter which means a little rock or stone”, “and Thomas called Didymus” or “and Thomas whose name means a twin and was called Didymus which means two fold or twain”, “and Nathanael” which means “gift of God” “of Cana in Galilee” or “from Cana which means place of reeds within the region and territory of northern Palestine, bounded on the north by Syria, on the west by Sidon, Tyre, Ptolemais and their territories and the promontory of Carmel, on the south by Samaria and on the east by the Jordan”. John shared how “Simon Peter, Thomas and Nathanael from Cana of Galilee” were together again.
The verse goes on to say, “... and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.” John continued with the words, “and the sons of Zebedee “and the male offsprings and progeny belonging to Zebedee whose name means my gift and was a fisherman of Galilee and the husband of Salome. (This was James and John”), “and two other of his disciples” which means “and two other students, pupils and attendants of Jesus”. John shared how “James and John” as well as “two other” “students and pupils” of Jesus were with them.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how a number of Jesus' “disciples” gathered together again which included Simon Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, James, John and two others. After Jesus appeared to His “disciples” before, it was normal for His “disciples” to assemble with one another. However, there were delays in Jesus appearing again, and the disciples will make a decision to do something with their time. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their life to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive their sins, grant them everlasting life and be present with them even when they do not know He is there.
Next time John shares how, “Simon Peter said unto them, I go a fishing”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
