John the apostle wrote after Jesus was dead, buried and resurrected how Mary Magdalene, Simon Peter and John went to His tomb and discovered His body was not there. The disciples went home, but, “Mary stood without at the sepulcher weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulcher, And saw two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. And they said unto her, Woman, why are you weeping? She said unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him. And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus said unto her, Woman, why are you weeping? whom do you seek? She, supposing him to be the gardener, said unto him, Sir, if you have borne him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away”, and in chapter twenty and verse sixteen of his book John shared how Mary, “turned herself, and said unto him, Rabboni” where we read:
Jesus said unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and said unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.
The verse begins, “Jesus said unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and said unto him, Rabboni;” John began with the words, “Jesus said unto her” which means “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation uttered, declared and proclaimed to her, Mary”, “Mary” which means “their rebellion and was from Magdala”. “She turned herself” which means “she, Mary, reversed, converted and turned again”, “and said unto him” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to him, Jesus”, “Rabboni” which means “master, chief or prince”. John shared how Jesus said “Mary's name” and she turned again unto Him and called Him “master”.
The verse goes on to say, “which is to say, Master.” John continued with the words, “which is to say” or “that utters, declares and proclaims Jesus as”, “Master” which means “teacher and instructor”. John shared how “Mary” recognized Jesus and called Him “Master” or “teacher”.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus revealed Himself to “Mary” by simply speaking her name. Jesus knew who “Mary” was even when she did not recognize Him. God knows the name of every person reading these words, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to pay the price for the sins of every person. Those who believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with God. Jesus knew “Mary's name”, and she called Him “Master” when she recognized Him. Those who are wise will yield to Him in the same manner as “Mary”.
Next time John shares how Jesus tells Mary, “touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
