A Fire of Coals and Fish and Bread - John 21:9

John the apostle wrote about Jesus' disciples, “Simon Peter said unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with you. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. Then Jesus said unto them, Children, have you any meat? They answered him, No. And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and you shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea. And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse nine of his book John shared, “as soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread” where we read:

As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there,

and fish laid thereon, and bread.

The verse begins, “As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, ...”. John began with the words, “as soon then as they were come to land” which means “even when the time came when the other disciples in the small boat arrived on the sea shore”, “they saw a fire of coal there” or “the other disciples who were fishing observed, beheld and notice a heap of burning coals in that place”. John shared when the other disciples who were fishing with Simon Peter arrived upon the beach they notice a “burning heap of coals” on the shore.

The verse continues, “... and fish laid thereon, and bread.” John added the words, “and fish laid thereon” “and fish situated or laid upon the coals of fire” “and bread” which means “and food composed of flour mixed with water and baked ”. John shared how the disciples who were fishing with Simon Peter saw “fish” situated upon the burning coals of fire and “bread” there as well.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus was cooking breakfast upon the shore. This normal activity must have blessed His disciples as they saw Jesus and noticed Him near the burning coals. Jesus will give further instructions to His disciples in our next verse, but for now let all who read these words understand Jesus was alive again and performing regular activities. Jesus desires to have a personal relationship with every person, and when they put their faith and trust in Him as their “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive their sins, grant them everlasting life and care for their every day needs. Let all who read these words consider carefully the burning coals, the fish and the bread being prepared by the Lord Jesus who cares for everyone in the world.

Next time John shares Jesus says, “bring of the fish which you have now caught”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
