John the apostle wrote how about Jesus' disciples, “Simon Peter said unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with you. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. Then Jesus said unto them, Children, have you any meat? They answered him, No. And he said unto them, Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and you shall find. They cast therefore, and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes. Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse eight of his book John shared how, “the other disciples came in a little ship” where we read:
And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.
The verse begins, “And the other disciples came in a little ship;” John began with the words, “and the other disciples” which means “and the other students, pupils and attendants of Jesus” “came in a little ship” or “arose and appeared in a small sailing vessel or boat”. John shared how more “student and pupils” of Jesus arrived on the sea shore in a “small sailing vessel”.
The verse goes on to say, “(for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.” John continued with the words, “(for they were not far from land” “(because, since and on account that the other disciples were not a long distance from the sea shore”, “but as it were two hundred cubits” which means “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the distance was about two hundred cubits or three hundred feet”,) “dragging the net with fishes” or “haling or drawing the fishing seine or net filled with fish”. John shared how these other disciples of Jesus were a short distance away from the sea shore, about three hundred feet, so they began to “drag” their net filled with fish toward the shore.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus' other disciples in the little sailing vessel were not a long way from the sea shore, so they began to “drag” their net full of fish toward land. The net was too full to pull into their boat, so they had to “drag” it along with them. We can imagine their struggle and excitement with such a massive haul, and their desire was to have all the fish brought to the shore without loss. Jesus performed another miracle with these fishermen who became His disciples, and as a reminder of His power, He allowed them not only to catch these fish, but also gave them the power and wisdom to retain them. God's desire is to have a personal relationship like this with every person, and when they yield their lives to Him as their “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive their sins, grant them eternal life and bless them in their assignments within His Kingdom. Let all who read these words surrender to Jesus who is able to bless them beyond anything they have ever experienced before.
Next time John shares, “as soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
