Until the Day Jesus was Taken Up - Acts 1:2

Luke the physician wrote, “The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach”, and in chapter one and verse two of the book of Acts Luke how Jesus did and taught these things, “until the day in which he was taken up” where we read:

Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

The verse begins, “Until the day in which he was taken up, ...” Luke began with the words, “until the day” which means “till the particular and certain time or day” “in which he was taken up” or “that he, Jesus, was received upwardly”. Luke shared how he wrote of the doings and teachings of Jesus till He was “received back” into Heaven.

The verse continues, “... after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:” Luke added the words, “after that he through the Holy Ghost” or “by means, reason and account that he, Jesus, by way of the most sacred, pure, morally blameless and religious third person of the triune God who is coequal and co-eternal with the Father and the Son” “had given commandments” which means “had ordered, enjoined and charged” “unto the apostles” or “to the delegates, messengers and ones sent forth with orders” “whom he had chosen” which means “that he, Jesus, elected, picked out and selected”. Luke shared how he wrote his account of Jesus “after” He by the Holy Spirit had directed His “chosen ones” to share the gospel.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn more about the timing for him writing these words. Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit of God, charged His disciples or “apostles” with orders for sharing the gospel throughout the world. Jesus would return to Heaven soon, and the responsibility for sharing the “good news” of “salvation” through Jesus Christ would be upon their shoulders. Luke will continue his introduction in our next verse, but for now let us realize God desired to continue sharing His forgiveness of sins and impartation of eternal life through His “apostles”, and those who are wise will carefully examine these words and yield their lives to Him.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “showed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
