The apostle John wrote how, “they took Jesus, and led him away. And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha. And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was near to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews”, and in chapter nineteen and verse twenty-two of his book John wrote how Pilate said, “What I have written I have written” where we read:
Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.
The verse reads, “Pilate answered, ...” John began with the word, “Pilate” whose name means “armed with a spear and was the sixth Roman procurator of Judah and Samaria who ordered Christ to be crucified” “answered” or “responded and began to speak” the following words. John shared how “Pilate” responded to the “high priests'” request by saying the following words.
The verse goes on to say, “... What I have written I have written.” John continued with the words, “what I have written” or “that which I, Pilate, have inscribed, delineated or formed in letters on a tablet, parchment, paper or other material” “I have written” which means “I, Pilate, have inscribed, delineated or formed in letters on a tablet, parchment, paper or other material”. John shared how “Pilate” told the “high priests” that what he had “written” was not going to be altered.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how “Pilate” responded to the “high priests'” request to have him rewrite his inscription concerning Jesus. To Pilate's credit, he refused to oblige them. Jesus is the “King” not only of the Jews, but also of the whole world. He is the “KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS”, and anyone who recognizes Him as such and yields their life to Him will be forgiven of their sins and inherit everlasting life with God. What “Pilate” refused to alter God confirmed, and those who are wise will surrender themselves to the “King of the Jews”.
Next time John shares how, “the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
