John the apostle wrote how, “the first day of the week came Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulcher, and saw the stone taken away from the sepulcher”, and in chapter twenty and verse two of his book John shared how Mary Magdalene told Simon Peter and John, “they have taken away the Lord out of the sepulcher, and we know not where they have laid him” where we read:
Then she ran, and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulcher, and we know not where they have laid him.
The verse begins, “Then she ran, and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said unto them, ...” John began with the words, “then she ran” which means “at that time Mary Magdalene ran in haste”, “and came to Simon Peter” or “and arose and appeared to Simon whose name means a little stone, Peter whose name means a little rock or stone”, “and to the other disciple” which means “and toward the other student, pupil and attendant who was John himself”, “whom Jesus loved” or “who the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation was fond of, approved and loved dearly”, “and said unto them” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to Simon Peter and John” the following words. John shared how “Mary Magdalene” left the tomb in haste to go to “Simon Peter and John” whom she told the following.
The verse goes on to say, “... They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulcher, and we know not where they have laid him.” John continued with the words, “they have taken away the Lord” or “” “out of the sepulcher” which means “they, whomever they are, have removed and carried off the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah”, “and we know not” or “and we, Mary Magdalene and others, are unaware and without knowledge as to” “where they have laid him” which means “the place and location they, whoever took Jesus away, set, place and lay Jesus down”. John shared how “Mary Magdalene” told “Simon Peter and John” that she was unsure who took Jesus away and where they placed His body.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how “Mary Magdalene” responded to finding Jesus' body removed from the tomb. She ran quickly to “Simon Peter and John” who were leaders among Jesus' disciples and told them someone took His body, and she had no idea where the laid Him. “Mary Magdalene” was observing her physical world, and she gave the information she perceived. She did not know that Jesus was risen from the dead at this point, and until that discovery was made, all she desired is for Jesus' body to be found. God knew His plan of salvation through His Son Jesus all the while, and because Jesus died for the sins of the world and was subsequently “raised” from the dead, every person who yields their life to Him will be forgiven of their sins, receive everlasting life with God and have a personal relationship with Him. Let all who consider only the physical information they have perceived about Jesus realize there is more than the eye can see.
Next time John shares how, “Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulcher”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
