The apostle John shared how after Jesus died on the cross, “the Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then came the soldiers, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they broke not his legs: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knows that he said is true, that you might believe”, and in chapter nineteen and verse thirty-six of his book John shared how, “these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled” where we read:
For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
The verse reads, “For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, ...” John began with the words, “for these things were done” which means “because, since and on account that all the acts performed and experienced by Jesus were”, “that the scripture” or “so the Holy Writ and prophecies within it” “should be fulfilled” which means “was to be completed, finished and accomplished”. John shared how everything “done” by Jesus was to “accomplish and complete” all the prophecies in the Holy Scriptures, the Bible, concerning His ministry on the earth.
The verse goes on to say, “... A bone of him shall not be broken.” John continued with the words, “a bone of him” or “a physical bone belonging to him, Jesus” “shall not be broken” which means “will in no way be shattered, bruised or cracked apart”. John shared how not a single “bone” of Jesus was “broken” and this fulfilled scripture concerning Him as well. (See Psalm 34:20)
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how John himself was a witness to the fulfillment of the prophesy in Psalms that said not a single “bone” of Jesus would be “broken”. Each of the prophecies concerning Jesus serve as “testimony” to the fact that He is indeed the Messiah and Christ of God. No one else accomplished all the prophetical details that Jesus did, and John's personal account of Him keeping this “scripture” should convince those who read his testimony to surrender their lives to Him. When they submit themselves to Jesus, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life. Let all who read these words carefully consider John's testimony and yield themselves to Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time John shares another scripture that says, “they shall look on him whom they pierced”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
