Looking Upon the Pierced - John 19:37

The apostle John shared after Jesus died on the cross, “the Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then came the soldiers, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they broke not his legs: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knows that he said is true, that you might believe. For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken”, and in chapter nineteen and verse thirty-seven of his book John shared another scripture that says, “they shall look on him whom they pierced” where we read:

And again another scripture says, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

The verse reads, “And again another scripture says, ...” John began with the words, “and again” which means “and further or moreover” “another scripture says” or “an other writing in the Holy Writ that utters, declares and proclaims” the following words. John referred to “another” prophesy pertaining to Jesus.

The verse continues, “... They shall look on him whom they pierced.” John added the words, “they shall look on him” or “they, people, will observe and behold him, Jesus” “whom they pierced” which means “that they, the Roman soldiers, stuck with a spear”. (See Psalm 22:16-17) John shared the prophesy that declared how people would observe the One who was “pierced” which was Jesus.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn about another prophesy fulfilled by Jesus. One by one John shared details in Jesus' life that no one else experienced, and God's purpose for telling these things in advance was so people would understand Jesus is His Messiah and Christ who came to pay for the sins of the world. Jesus died on the cross so people would not have to pay the penalty of death for their own sins, (See Romans 6:23) and when they yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive their sins and grant them everlasting life with God. Let all who read these words “look upon him whom they pierced” and believe.

Next time John shares about, “Joseph of Arimathaea”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
