Jesus Reveals His Hands and Side - John 20:20

John the apostle wrote after Jesus was dead, buried and resurrected, “the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and said unto them, Peace be unto you”, and in chapter twenty and verse twenty of his book John shared how Jesus, “showed unto them his hands and his side” where we read:

And when he had so said, he showed unto them his hands and his side.

Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.

The verse begins,And when he had so said, he showed unto them his hands and his side.” John began with the words, “and when he had so said” which means “and at the time and moment he, Jesus , had uttered, declared and proclaimed Peace unto His disciples”, “he showed unto them his hands” or “he, Jesus, revealed, exposed and gave evidence to His disciples of His physical hands” “and his side” which means “and the physical side of His body”. John shared how Jesus revealed His “hands and side” after He spoke a word of “Peace” to them.

The verse goes on to say, “Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.” John continued with the words, “then were the disciples glad” or “at that time Jesus' students, pupils and attendants rejoiced exceedingly, thrived and were full of joy”, “when they saw the Lord” which means “at the time and moment they, Jesus' disciples, observed, beheld, noticed and discerned the One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, and the title given to God the Messiah”. John shared how Jesus' “disciples” were rejoicing exceedingly after they knew He was with them again.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus gave His “disciples” proof that it was actually Him who was speaking to them. When He showed them His “hands and side”, they saw where the wounds were on His body. They knew this was Jesus who appeared to them, and the “disciples” began to be full of joy because their “Lord” was with them again. Jesus followed through on His plan of death and resurrection for mankind, and because He carried out each of them, anyone who yields their life to Him will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with God. Let all who read these words consider the wounds of Jesus Christ which were endured on their behalf and submit themselves to the only One who is able to “save”.

Next time John shares how Jesus, “said … to them again, Peace be unto you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
