The Napkin - John 20:7

The apostle John wrote, “the first day of the week came Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulcher, and saw the stone taken away from the sepulcher. Then she ran, and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulcher, and we know not where they have laid him. Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulcher. So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulcher. And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in. Then came Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulcher, and saw the linen clothes lie, ...”, and in chapter twenty and verse seven of his book John shared how Peter saw, “the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes” where we read:

And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes,

but wrapped together in a place by itself.

The verse begins, “And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, ...” John began with the words, “and the napkin” which means “and the handkerchief or cloth for wiping perspiration from the face or swathing the head of a corpse”, “that was about his head” or “that was upon his, Jesus', physical head”, “not lying with the linen clothes” which means “not situated or placed alongside of the linen cloths used for swathing the dead body of Jesus”. John shared how “Simon Peter” also noticed the “cloth which was wrapped around Jesus' head”, and it was placed separate from the “linen cloths” which were put upon Jesus' dead body.

The verse continues, “... but wrapped together in a place by itself.” John added the words, “but wrapped together” or “moreover rolled up or entwined” “in a place by itself” which means “in a separate location by it's own self”. John shared how “Simon Peter” noticed the “cloth” which was wrapped around Jesus' head was rolled up or folded in a location by itself.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how “Simon Peter” also notice the “cloth” which was wrapped around Jesus' head folded and lying separate from the other “linen” burial clothes. Each of these details were noticed by “Simon Peter”, but Jesus was no where to be found. God raised Jesus from the dead even as Jesus foretold His disciples. God's plan of salvation was completed, and now every person who believes and trusts in His Son Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life in Heaven. The “linen cloths” and “napkin” were a testimony that Jesus was risen and all who yield to Him will be “saved”.

Next time John shares, “then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulcher”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
