John the apostle wrote how, “the first day of the week came Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulcher, and saw the stone taken away from the sepulcher. Then she ran, and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulcher, and we know not where they have laid him. Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulcher. So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulcher. And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in. Then came Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulcher, and saw the linen clothes lie, And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself. Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulcher, and he saw, and believed”, and in chapter twenty and verse nine of his book John shared how, “they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead” where we read:
For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.
The verse begins, “For as yet they knew not the scripture, ...” John began with the words, “for as yet” which means “because, since and on account that even and indeed at this time” “they knew not the scripture” or “Simon Peter and John were unaware and without understanding to the writing and prophesy in a certain portion of the Holy Scripture” that declared the following. John shared how “Simon Peter and John” were still unaware of the “prophesy” in the Holy Scriptures that proclaimed the following.
The verse continues, “... that he must rise again from the dead.” John added the words, “that he must rise again” or “that it was necessary that he, Jesus, be raised and lifted up” “from the dead” which means “apart and separate from the non-living, deceased, inanimate and destitute of life”. John shared how the “Holy Scriptures” declared that Jesus was to be “raised” from the non-living, inanimate and destitute of life. (See Psalm 22:22, Isaiah 25:8 and Hosea 13:14)
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how “Simon Peter and John” were without understanding about the prophesies that declared Jesus would “rise from the dead”. God knew all along that His Son Jesus would come to the earth to die on the cross for the sins of the world, and three days later would rise from the dead. This would provide forgiveness for the sins of every person who believes and trusts in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”. Those who yield their lives to Jesus who was raised from the dead will be granted everlasting life and a personal relationship with the God of the Universe. Let all who consider the death and resurrection of Jesus yield their lives to Jesus who alone is able to provide them with eternal “salvation”.
Next time John shares how, “the disciples went away again unto their own home”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
