Written that You Might Believe - John 20:31

John the apostle wrote how, “many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book”, and in chapter twenty and verse thirty-one of his book John shared how, “these things are written, that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ” where we read:

But these are written, that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God;

and that believing you might have life through his name.

The verse begins, “But these are written, that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God;” John began with the words, “but these are written” which means “however, moreover, nonetheless and notwithstanding the words inscribed by John were formed and delineated on a tablet, parchment, paper or other material”, “that you might believe” or “so you, anyone reading these words, may trust in, rely upon, cling to and have confidence” “that Jesus is the Christ” which means “that the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation exists as the anointed One and the Messiah”, “the Son of God” or “the Son of the Heavenly Father God”. John shared how he wrote the words in his book so the people reading it would “trust in and rely upon” Jesus as the “Christ, Messiah and Son of God”.

The verse continues, “and that believing you might have life through his name.” John added the words, “and that believing” or “and so trusting in, relying upon, clinging to and having confidence in Jesus” “you might have life” which means “you, the readers of this book may experience the absolute fullness of life that is real and genuine, vigorous, devoted to God, blessed and forever” “through his name” or “by means and reason of his, Jesus', name and all the name is used for everything which the name covers, everything the thoughts or feelings of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing, remembering”. John shared how every person who reads his words and “trusts in and relies upon” Jesus will experience the “absolute fullness of life that is genuine and real”.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn why John wrote this account of the life of Jesus. His desire was for every person reading His words to believe in Jesus Christ as the Messiah and Son of God. When they yield their lives to Jesus, people will be forgiven of their sins and granted eternal life with God that secures their future after death but also their living upon the earth. Let all who read John's words surrender themselves to Jesus and “believe” in Him even as John desired.

Next time we begin a new chapter and see John share how, “After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
