Two Angels in White - John 20:12

John the apostle wrote after Jesus was dead, buried and resurrected, Simon Peter and John went to see His empty grave. Afterward, “the disciples went away again unto their own home. But Mary stood without at the sepulcher weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulcher, ...”, and in chapter twenty and verse twelve of his book John shared how Mary, “saw two angels in white sitting” where we read:

And saw two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet,

where the body of Jesus had lain.

The verse begins, “And saw two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, ...” John began with the words, “and saw two angels in white” which means “and observed, noticed, discovered and discerned two messengers or envoys dress in white clothing” “sitting” or “being seated”, “the one at the head” which means “the one angel where the physical head of Jesus used to lie”, “and the other at the feet” or “and the other angel where the feet of Jesus were”. John shared how “Mary Magdalene” noticed “two” messengers of God dressed in “white” clothing seated in the areas where the “head and feet” of Jesus used to lie.

The verse goes on to say, “... where the body of Jesus had lain.” John continued with the words, “where the body of Jesus” or “in the place and location that the physical body belonging to the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “had lain” which means “was situated, placed and set”. John shared how “Mary Magdalene” was looking upon the “two angels” who were seated at the “head and feet” of the place where Jesus' body was placed and now gone.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how “two messengers” from God were within the tomb where Jesus' physical body used to lie. These “angels” dressed in “white” were seated at the “head and feet” of the location where Jesus' body was placed. Jesus was not there because He was risen from the dead, and we shall see how these “angels” inform “Mary” concerning what happened with Jesus' body. For now let us consider the reaction of “Mary” when she observed these “two messengers” and realize this was God's effort to allow all people know that Jesus not only died for their “sins”, but was also resurrected from the dead so they could live with Him forever. God loves everybody, and when they submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive their sins, grant them everlasting life and develop a personal relationship with them. Let all who consider these “two angels” surrender their lives to Jesus Christ who was risen on their behalf.

Next time John shares how the angels ask Mary, “Woman, why are you weeping?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
