John the apostle wrote how Jesus told Peter, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, When you were young, you girded yourself, and walked wherever you would: but when you shall be old, you shall stretch forth your hands, and another shall gird you, and carry you where you would not. This spoke he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he said unto him, Follow me. Then Peter, turning about, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrays you? Peter seeing him said to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? Jesus said unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to you? You follow me. Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to you?”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse twenty-four of his book John shared how, “This is the disciple which testifies of these things, and wrote these things” where we read:
This is the disciple which testifies of these things, and wrote these things:
and we know that his testimony is true.
The verse begins, “This is the disciple which testifies of these things, and wrote these things:” John began with the words, “this is the disciple” which means “the same person, about whom Jesus spoke to Peter, exists as the student, pupil and attendant” “which testifies of these things” or “who witnesses, bears witness and gives testimony pertaining to all the events and happenings concerning Jesus”, “and wrote these things” which means “and inscribed, delineated and formed in letters on a tablet, parchment, paper or other material concerning the events and happenings concerning Jesus”. John shared how he himself was the one who “gave witness to” and “wrote” about Jesus in his book.
The verse goes on to say, “and we know that his testimony is true.” John continued with the words, “and we know” or “and we, both John, Jesus' other disciples and believers understand, perceive and realize” “that his testimony is true” which means “that his, Jesus', witness is truthful”. John shared how both he, Jesus' other disciples and believers understood and validated that what he “wrote” is truthful.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we see how John declared his “testimony” and “writing” was not only verified by himself, Jesus' other disciples and believers, but also that his words are “truthful” and valid. Anyone who reads these words will discover the life of Jesus whom God the Heavenly Father sent to the world to die for the sins of every person, and He raised Him from the dead three days later. Anyone who surrenders their life to Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life in Heaven, and those who are wise will read and understand the “testimony” and truthful “witness” of John.
Next time we end the book of John and see him share, “there are also many other things which Jesus did”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
