In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “The simple believes every word: but the prudent man looks well to his going”, and in chapter fourteen and verse sixteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “a wise man fears, and departs from evil” where we read,
A wise man fears, and departs from evil: but the fool rages, and is confident.
The verse begins, “A wise man fears, and departs from evil:” Solomon began with the words, “a wise man fears” or “a skillful, shrewd, cunning, wily and prudent person whether male or female reveres, is afraid, morally reverent and in awe”, “and departs from evil” which means “and separates and apart from wickedness, mischief, hurt, bad, trouble, affliction, harm and adversity”. Solomon shared how a person who is cunning and shrewd is reverent and in awe and separates themselves from wickedness and adversity.
The verse continues, “but the fool rages, and is confident.” Solomon added the words, “but the fool rages” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the stupid fellow, dullard, simpleton and arrogant one transgresses, alienates, takes away and becomes obsolete”, “and is confident” which means “and exists as trusting, secure without care and sure”. Solomon said the person who is a dullard and simpleton transgresses and exists without care and security.
When we meditate upon Solomon's words in this verse, we see how there is a difference between people who shrewdly are in awe of God and separate from wickedness, however, people who are simpletons and arrogant continue in their transgressions and are secure within their activities. God knows the truth, and because every person is guilty of sin, God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and keep us in awe of Him while we depart from wickedness and avoid foolish people who sin and are secure within them.
Next time Solomon says, “he that is soon angry deals foolishly”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
