In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “A wise man fears, and departs from evil: but the fool rages, and is confident”, and in chapter fourteen and verse seventeen of Proverbs Solomon said, “he that is soon angry deals foolishly” where we read,
He that is soon angry deals foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated.
The verse begins, “He that is soon angry deals foolishly:” Solomon began with the words, “he that is soon angry” or “the person whether male and female who is impatient, hasty and shortly in wrath that wrinkles the nostrils and nose” “deals foolishly” which means “fashions, accomplishes, makes and produces folly and silliness”. Solomon shared how the person who is quick to wrath does so in a silly and folly filled manner.
The verse goes on to say, “and a man of wicked devices is hated” Solomon continued with the words, “a man of wicked devices” or “and a person whether male or female who has criminal, guilty of crime, evil and hostile to God intentions and schemes” “is hated” which means “exists utterly as an enemy and foe”. Solomon said a person who commits criminal and evil intentions is as an enemy and foe to others.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how people who quickly become hostile and filled with wrath produce silly and folly filled actions, and a person who has evil intentions is an enemy to the people they are around. God wants us to be “slow to anger” (See James 1:19-20), and He will help us to be this way when we surrender to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins. As we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us the power through His Holy Spirit to control our wrath and avoid being people of “wicked devices”.
Next time Solomon says, “the simple inherit folly”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
