Paul
the apostle told the people in Rome “when
we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did
work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death”,
and in
chapter
seven and verse six of Romans, Paul told the people in Rome, “now
we are delivered from the law”
where
we read:
But
now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were
held;
that
we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in
the oldness of the letter.
The
verse begins, “But
now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were
held;” Paul
began with the word, “but
now”
which means “moreover and at this moment and present time” “we
are delivered”
which means “Paul, his companions and his believing readers are
rendered idle, unemployed, inactive and inoperative” “from
the law”
or “separate and apart from the rule producing a state approved of
God”, “that
being dead”
or “since and because perished and slain” “wherein
we were held”
which means “whereby Paul, his companions and his believing readers
were held back, detained, restrained and hindered”. Paul shared how
he, his companions and his believing readers were “freed” from
“the penalty of death” which was incurred by their lack of
keeping “God's law”.
The
verse continues, “that
we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in
the oldness of the letter.” Paul
added the words, “that
we should serve”
or “that Paul, his companions and his believing readers world do
service, obey, submit and yield obedience” “in
newness”
which means “in a state of life in which the Holy Spirit places us
so as to produce a new state which is eternal life” “of
spirit”
or “the simple essence which is devoid of all or at least all
grosser matter and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring and
acting”, “and
not in the oldness”
which means “and not in the old state of life controlled” “of
the letter”
which means “through the writing, document or record”. The reason
Paul, his companions and his believing readers were “delivered from
the law” which caused “death” was to “submit and yield”
themselves anew in “spirit”
and not attempting to keep the “written law”.
When
we consider these words of Paul, we should be excited over what Jesus
has done for us. When He went to the cross and fulfilled the law and
paid it's penalty, death, we were “set at liberty” to live “with
a new spirit” and not being bound to “the law”. Paul desired
for the Romans to know the freedom they had obtained in Christ, and
how God poured out His “grace” or “unmerited favor” upon
everyone who will believe and trust in Him. May all who read these
words realize they have been “delivered from the law” and set
free to “live unto God”.
Next
time Paul asks his readers, “is
the law sin?”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
