Paul
the apostle exclaimed to the people in Rome,
“to
be carnally minded is
death; but to be spiritually minded is
life and peace”, and they that are after the flesh do mind the
things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of
the Spirit”.
In
chapter
eight and verse seven of Romans, Paul shared how “the
carnal mind is enmity against God”
where
we read:
for
it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
The
verse begins, “Because
the carnal mind is
enmity against God:” Paul
began with the word, “because”
which means “on account that and since” “the
carnal”
or “the mere human and earthly nature of man apart from divine
influence, and therefore prone to sin and opposed to God” “mind”
which means “inclination, purpose or thinking” “is
enmity”
or “is hostility, opposition and hatred” “against”
or “toward and unto” “God”
which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised
of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. Paul shared
how the “thinking and purpose” of the “fleshly and earthly”
person is in “opposition and hatred” toward “God”.
The
verse goes on to say, “for
it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.” Paul
added the word, “for”
which means “even as, indeed, no doubt, seeing then, verily and
therefore” “it is not
subject”
or “is not arranged under, subordinate and under control” “to
the law”
or “the rule producing a state approved of God” “of
God”
which refers to “the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised
of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”, “neither”
which means “nor and in no way” “indeed
can be”
which means “is able to be subject to God's
law”.
Paul shared how the “carnal
mind”
in “no way” is “subordinate or submissive” to “God's
law”.
When
we think through these words of Paul, we see how certain he is about
the “carnal mind” not being able to keep “God's law”.
He declared the “fleshly, carnal mind” is in “opposition
and hatred” toward God. This is why “human nature and effort”
cannot make a person “righteous” before God. No matter how
many “good works or deeds” a person does, there is no way to be
“perfect” before God. This is why Jesus Christ came. He kept
God's law flawlessly, and now everyone who “believes and trusts”
in Him not only shall be “saved” from their “carnal mind”,
but also are promised “everlasting life” with God.
Next
time Paul tells his readers, “they
that are in the flesh cannot please God”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
