Rebecca Also Had Conceived Romans 9:10

Paul the apostle shared with the people in Rome how, “They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed”, and he added, “For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son.” In chapter nine and verse ten of Romans, Paul told his readers, “Rebecca also had conceived by one” where we read:

And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;

The verse begins, And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, ...Paul began with the words, “and not only this” which means “not solely that Sara shall have a son of promise”; “but” or “nevertheless, notwithstanding moreover and” “when Rebecca also” whose name means “at the time ensnarer” and was “the wife of Isaac” “had conceived” or “cohabited and became pregnant” “by one” which refers to “through only a certain one which was Isaac”. Paul referred to how “Rebecca” also conceived with a son.

The verse continues, ... even by our father Isaac;Paul added the words, “even by our which means “through Paul's, his companions' and his believing readers'” “father” or “generator or progenitor” “Issac” whose name means “to laugh” and was “the son of Abraham and Sarah”. Paul shared how “Isaac” was the forefather who fathered sons with “Rebecca”.

When we think through these words of Paul, we see how he employed the example of “Rebecca and Isaac” to demonstrate how God fulfills “promised children”. Birth in the flesh is different than birth in the spirit or by “promise”. God promised Abraham “through Isaac shall your seed be called”, and therefore it was necessary for “Rebecca” to have a “promised son”. She did, and the “promised” Messiah Jesus came through their family line. Now everyone who has “faith and trust” in Jesus Christ as “Savior and Lord” will be “born of the spirit” or of “promise” and may know and have a relationship with God for all the days of their lives.

Next time we see Paul refer to, “the children being not yet born”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
