Paul
the apostle referred to Isaiah's words as he told the people in Rome,
“it is written, God
has given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see,
and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day”,
and he continued with King David's words as he wrote, “Let
their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumbling-block, and a
recompense unto them.” In
chapter eleven and verse ten of Romans,
Paul referred to King David's words as he told the people in Rome,
“let their eyes be
darkened...and bow down their back”
where we read:
Let
their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their
back alway.
The
verse begins, “Let
their eyes be darkened, that they may not see,
...”
Paul
began with the words, “let
their eyes”
which means to “allow their bodies parts used for vision and sight”
“be
darkened”
or “be covered and deprived of light”, “that
they”
which refers to “that the people who have their table made a snare
and a trap” “may
not see”
which means “so they cannot discern or perceive”. Paul shared
more of David's words as he reemphasized letting them be without
“sight”.
The
verse continues, “...
and bow down their back alway. ”.
Paul
added the words, “and
bow down”
which means “to bend together and completely” “their
back”
or “the rear of their bodies”
“alway”
which means “at all times”. David also desired for these people
to have their “backs”
“bent together” forever.
When
we think through these words of Paul, we discover the judgments David
desired to be upon the people who were opposed to God and His ways.
David wanted them to be “blind” and “bent together completely”
because of their obstinate behavior. God desires for every person to
receive the “gospel” of His Son Jesus Christ who died on the
cross for the sins of the world. Every person can be “saved”, but
if they choose to reject God's offer, David's desire and Paul's
reference will be fulfilled as they shall be “blind” and “bowed
down” forever.
Next
time Paul questions his readers, “Have
they stumbled that they should fall?”,
so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
